Established in December 1952, the municipal library of Acre is named after Vincenzo Padula (1819-1893), one of the most illustrious figures in the history of Acre, a passionate poet and scholar, journalist and patriot. Founder of the magazine «Il Bruzio», with his investigations he denounced the conditions of the laborer classes in revolt for the land, placing the southern question at the center of the public debate and defending the political order that arose from the Unification of Italy against reactionary attempts of legitimists and clericals.
In the historic home of the Acrese thinker, Palazzo Padula, now home to the Foundation of the same name and the Museum of Rural Civilization, the library found a location for a long time, before moving in 2020 to the beautiful rooms of Palazzo Sanseverino-Falcone. In its collection, ample space is reserved for the city's bibliographic production, which does not fail to produce interesting research in various fields, thanks to numerous associations and foundations and a traditionally very lively cultural life.

The book heritage acquired over time by the library through municipal administrations, bequests and donations amounts to approximately twelve thousand volumes, cataloged and divided into thematic sections. In addition to the vast collection of fiction, non-fiction and miscellaneous fiction, the library has a very well-stocked section dedicated to children and a vast identity section; it is also possible to consult the years of numerous periodicals and newspapers.
LIBRARY SECTIONS
The collection is arranged in two large rooms equipped with internet and wi-fi stations on the second floor of Palazzo Falcone; the reading room is named after the Acrese writer Aurora Luzzi, who died prematurely. Here you can consult the works and the collection of periodicals and newspapers, but also conduct your own research, study or simply relax with a good read. A third room, of great charm, reserved for consultation, hosted until recently the Museum of the Spontaneous Flora of Calabria, now moved to the San Domenico complex in Piazza Principe di Piemonte. Certainly, in the warmth of these rooms with high wooden ceilings, among original pieces of furniture and ancient papers, you can fully breathe the scent of history!
The precious book heritage of the “Vincenzo Padula” Library is classified according to the Italian rules for cataloging authors (RIPA) and included in the OPAC online national catalogue: since 2006 the Library has in fact been part of the Vibonese Library System, a network of libraries that allows you to manage the interlending in a very agile way. The loan lasts thirty days and is renewable if the volume is not booked.
Online research and lending are available on the Sebina Open Library platform of the Regional Library System; know, however, that the “Vincenzo Padula” Library has not abandoned the good old system of paper files, for those who can go there
